F1b Reverse Bernedoodle/75% Bernese Mountain Dog, 25% Poodle
A Reverse F1b Bernedoodle is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. This means they are 3/4 Bernese Mountain Dog and 1/4 Poodle. This is a unique blend as there is a 50/50 chance of puppies having an unfurnished coat such as our Oakley. The advantages of this type of coat is that, it is low maintenance however there is shedding.
What we can expect from our Puppies
F2b Bernedoodle/ 62.5 % Bernese Mountain Dog, 37.5 % Poodle
An F2b Bernedoodle is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle and an F1b Bernedoodle.
We can expect half of the litter to carry one furnishing gene and the other half to not carry any.
Coat type IC/IC indicates that there are two copies of the "improper coat" gene present with the absence of typical furnishings seen in many doodles. This genetic trait causes the dog's coat to resemble that of non-doodle breeds, such as the Bernese Mountain Dog. Some prefer the look of the Bernese but with less shedding than a pure Bernese. This coat will not require regular grooming making it low maintenance however will shed more than furnished doodles.
Coat Type F/IC such as Annie's with one "furnished" gene and one "improper coat" gene results in a Straight or wavy coat with low shedding. While this coat is allergy friendly it is not considered hypoallergenic as it lacks the double F/F gene found in Poodles. This coat will give the Teddy Bear appearance but will require regular grooming to keep the hair trimmed.
F1 Bernedoodle/50% Bernese Mountain Dog, 50% Poodle
An F1 Bernedoodle is a first generation hybrid dog resulting from the direct cross of a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and a purebred Poodle. Since pure bred Poodles carry two copies of the Furnishing Gene nearly all F1 Bernedoodles will inherit at least one copy of the furnishing gene. Due to the furnishing gene being dominant you get the classic "teddy bear" look with longer fluffy facial hair and significantly less shedding. This coat requires regular grooming and brushing as the hair will continuously grow similar to the poodle coat.
A furnished Bernedoodle is characterized by the "classic" doodle appearance, featuring long, fluffy facial hair and a shaggy coat inherited from its Poodle lineage. This trait is determined by the RSPO2 gene (furnishings gene).
Key Physical Features
Facial Furnishings: The most defining characteristic is the presence of a shaggy beard, mustache, and prominent eyebrows. This gives them the popular "teddy bear" look.
Fluffy Extremities: Hair on the legs and paws is fuller and fluffier compared to unfurnished dogs, which have sleek, short-haired legs.
Tail & Ears: They typically have longer, denser hair on their tails and ears.
Coat Texture: While often wavy or curly, a furnished Bernedoodle can also have a straight but fluffy coat. The hair grows continuously like a Poodle's.
Functional & Maintenance Traits
Low Shedding: Furnishings are strongly correlated with minimal to no shedding, making them a better choice for those with mild allergies.
High Grooming Needs: Because the hair keeps growing and is prone to matting, they require regular brushing (at least weekly) and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks.
Debris Magnet: Their long, plush hair tends to collect burrs, mud, snow, and "beards" can get wet or messy while eating or drinking.
Health and Longevity: They benefit from "hybrid vigor" and the Poodle's genetics, typically living 10–12+ years, compared to the 6–8 years of a pure Bernese Mountain Dog.
An unfurnished Bernedoodle is a specific variation of the breed that lacks the typical "fluffy" or "shaggy" facial hair (known as furnishings) and instead closely resembles a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog. While many owners seek the "teddy bear" look of a furnished doodle, unfurnished Bernedoodles offer several practical and aesthetic advantages.
Key Physical Features
Smooth Face: They lack the characteristic beard, mustache, and eyebrows found in furnished doodles.
Sleek Muzzle and Legs: The hair on the nose, feet, and legs stays short and sleek rather than growing long and fluffy.
Bernese-Like Coat: Their body coat typically remains flat and straight, giving them a look that is often indistinguishable from a Bernese Mountain Dog.
Practical Differences
Easier Maintenance: Without a constantly growing coat, these dogs require significantly less grooming. They do not need to be shaved or clipped like furnished doodles, which can save owners $400 to $1,000 annually in grooming fees.
Reduced "Mess": No facial hair means no wet, smelly "beard" after drinking water and no debris trapped in long facial fluff.
Higher Shedding: Unlike hypoallergenic furnished doodles, unfurnished Bernedoodles do shed. While they generally shed less than a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog, they are not recommended for individuals with severe allergies.
Health and Longevity: They benefit from "hybrid vigor" and the Poodle's genetics, typically living 10–12+ years, compared to the 6–8 years of a pure Bernese Mountain Dog.
